Nurse Practitioner Overview

Nurse practitioners are RNs with several years of post-baccalaureate education (usually with a master's degree) that are required to pass a national certification exam. In their practice, they diagnose illness and prescribe interventions through interview and physical exam, order specific labs and diagnostic testing, and prescribe medications, while still providing health care education, counseling and supportive care to an individual, family or community.

Requires strong communication skills and team-leading ability
Must be self-directed and thrive in a fast-paced environment
Average pay: $80,000 per year
